Join poets, authors, and publishers in this small intimate panel about what it’s like to publish with a small press. Judie Rae, poet and author, has recently published a novel with small press owner and local poet and professor, Iven Lourie of Artemis Books – so we will hear both sides of the publishing equation from the dynamic duo! We will also hear from Ingrid Kariotis, who recently published a book of poems with the finishing line press, another small publisher. Join us for this dynamic panel where you will learn the advantages of publishing with a small press, get insider publishing information, and be able to ask all of your publishing questions!

About Artemis Books
Several years ago, Lily Nova and Iven Lourie collaborated on a book project to collect memoirs by women who had lived through World War II and its accompanying traumas and dislocations. Although the larger collection they envisioned is yet to be completed˜this project resulted in the publication of the volume Interrupted Lives, which collects memoirs of confinement from four women who survived Santo Tomas Internment Camp in Manila, The Phillipines, and has been adopted for classes and reading lists in Women’s History in a half dozen or more universities. This book needed a publishing imprint for the marketplace, and so Artemis Books was born! Later, when Iven collaborated with Matthias Schossig on the foreign rights division of his translation agency, iTRANSmedia, the project added a dimension of importing and exporting ideas to and from Europe˜the possibility of cultural exchange through the international literary marketplace.
Artemis will build up a publishing list of unusual and high quality books specializing in the following subjects: Women’s Memoirs, Health & Hygiene, Meditation & Spirituality, Collaborations of Fine Artists & Literary Writers. New Life Through Energy Healing by Dr. Reimar Banis, a Spring, 2009, release, is the first international Artemis project. It is a collaborative effort of a German author, a German publishing house (Via Nova Verlag), a British translator, an American literary agency, and a U.S. independent press, Artemis Books, distributed by a larger publisher, Gateways Books & Tapes. We at Artemis wish to share with you this cutting edge research and healing methodology from Europe, and we plan to bring to market more professional and literary books of this caliber.
About Judie Rae
I have enjoyed a long and varied writing career. My first published essay appeared in an academic journal entitled Media and Methods, now defunct. For this effort I was paid $35. I was so excited about being published that I couldn’t wait for my copy and so visited the library stacks.
It was through a writing group that I first connected with an agent and through her, published three teenage romances. Actually, the first was a spoof on the genre but apparently the editors were not aware of that. I also wrote a Nancy Drew Mystery, The Clue in the Camera. It was the experience of writing these young adult books that led me to pursue a master’s degree, for I realized how easy it would be to become a formula writer while I desperately wanted to write literary works. Two years later I received a Masters of Professional Writing. Soon I found myself teaching college English classes.
Like most writers who have been around awhile, I have several unpublished novels in my possession; perhaps they will one day see the light. One novel of mine, The Haunting of Walter Rabinowitz is being published by Artemis Books and will be available in Fall of 2019. When I moved to Northern California I started writing non-fiction essays for magazines such as Sacramento Bee, Sierra Heritage, Tahoe Quarterly, Outside California. I also wrote a college thematic reader entitled Rites of Passage.
Then came my interest in poetry. My poems have seen the light in such literary magazines as Nimrod, Wisconsin Review, Canary Online Literary Magazine, Mudfish and many others. In 2014, Finishing Line Press published my chapbook, The Weight of Roses. As a result of its publication I have been fortunate to meet other poets at readings, and I am even more pleased to call them friends.
About Ingrid Keriotis
Ingrid Keriotis’s first book of poetry, It Started with the Wild Horses, was published in 2019 by Finishing Line Press. Ingrid received her MFA in Creative Writing from Eastern Washington University and currently lives in Grass Valley where she teaches English at Sierra College. When it comes to writing poetry, she believes in Richard Hugo’s advice: “You owe reality nothing and the truth about your feelings everything.”
